"If it be right and honest to be spoken or done, undervalue not thyself so much, as to be discouraged from it." from The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius

"... beware the dangers of Groupthink! Just because all your mates think it’s a good idea is not a good reason for agreeing something – co-operatives need assertive members who think for themselves and share their opinions including fears and reservations." from: Cooperantics

Cooperatives are actually the anti-thesis of the accusation that we of "communitarian ideology" do not think critically and scientifically. To the contrary -principled critical thinking is essential to real cooperation.

My own experience of collectives over the last few years here in Oregon is that groupthink is profoundly encouraged, at the same time the value of expression of critical thinking is espoused.

I think this is because there is another equally important value that needs to be implemented: A sense of priority. Which is more important towards the real underlying goals of the group: Getting one's well-thought-out criticism heard, or getting the current task completed?

I find often addressing the turf-issue of whether the critic is being critical for the purpose of advancing the goals of the group or for the purpose of gathering praise for their skill at critical thinking takes precedence over getting shit done.
