Jeanne Benameur's Les Insurrections Singulières shows a young working class man grow through daring to leave his home -with an elderly lover of books as his guide.
Short of the Basic Income and Universal Health Care (as a Single Payer System), the single most helpful institution for allowing all members of society to contribute to their unique and fulles capacity may be the Public Library system.

Library, or Internet?
Date: 2014-10-12 05:57 pm (UTC)Can't focus on that argument right now, but would be happy to get back to it with you as time and resources permit.

Joel
Re: Library, or Internet?
Date: 2014-10-12 06:10 pm (UTC)Thank you, Joel, for making that distinction. I guess I really am out of touch, as I had not thought of online info. as real info. (as an academic I always verify as close to primary source as possible).
For me, the internet is not even close to as useful as a good, kind Librarian. Card catalogues are also still my friends, because they are things you can touch, and see the organisation. Print books are also generally more well vetted than online information, and most importantly of all, books don't require e-readers that many folks cannot afford.
Btw, I was able to see the GR review with no problem, but as far as getting the book, I have not searched in English, but I imagine that The Open Library may have it?
Best Regards,

Date: 2014-10-13 03:38 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure that the IEEE 'Forum' has been online all this millennium. 'Science' and 'Nature' and a bunch of others, also. Still available in print also, of course, but they're the same articles either way.
But your point about the librarians was why I was bringing it up. They not only find what you're looking for, they teach you to find what you're looking for. I don't think it's possible to be a decent librarian without also being a damn good teacher.
Indecent librarians being another thing entirely, of course.
best,
Joel

The comment they replied to was: I can't seem to access the book. I strongly agree with making sure Everybody has as much access to as much information as they can use; I think there is an argument to be made in favor of libraries as separate and distinct from available on-line information.
Exactly
